Importance of maternal breastfeeding

Aims: Show how important maternal breastfeeding is in the growth and development of children during the first months of life, and its effects on mother-child relationship (affective linkages and psychomotor development).

Purpose: Levels of maternal breastfeeding in the last century did not exceed 5% of the population.

Main issues:

• Composition of breast milk.

• Advantages of maternal breastfeeding to:

-          New born.

-          Mother.

•  Exposition of the UNICEF/WHO programme “Baby-friendly Hospital Initiative” (BFHI), from 1992.

• Ten steps to successful breastfeeding in all maternity wards.
